Tabletop Kickstarter Round-Up: The Books, Bait & Boomsticks Edition

All hail Dagon, god of the Deep Ones – aka, the only thing we could think of to thematically link the three tabletop titles covered in this week’s Kickstarter round-up. Okay, eldritch abominations, zombie horrors and fishing trawlers might have an unpleasant odour in common too, but our boy Dagon is way classier. It’s not even close.

ZOMBICIDE: INVADER

We’ve already taken a look at Zombicide: Invader, but there’s still time to get in on CMON’s predictably successful campaign, which is rapidly closing in on the £1.5 million mark. A fully co-operative board game, Zombicide: Invader puts a sci-fi spin on the tried-and-tested zombie-blasting formula, with up to six players defending a remote mining outpost from a swarm of infected aliens. With pledges starting at a 100 bucks, Zombicide’s latest big box outing doesn’t come cheap, but you do get your money’s worth – not only are there a tonne of Kickstarter exclusive survivors to pit against the extraterrestrial uglies, but those alien sculpts are looking pretty sweet too.

MISKATONIC UNIVERSITY: THE RESTRICTED COLLECTION

Time to trade one Kickstarter staple for another as we shift our terrified gaze from Zombicide’s shambling horde to the Lovecraftian horror of Miskatonic University: The Restricted Collection. Chaosium’s first Cthulhu-themed board game since 1987’s Arkham Horror does give us an interesting twist on the genre, however, with players scouring the grimoires of Miskatonic University’s perilous library for forbidden lore. Corral the correct arcane sigils and you’ll get the kudos of banishing an eldritch horror threatening Arkham… presuming you’ve not been driven mad first, that is. A push-your-luck set collection card game, the fast-playing Miskatonic University: The Restricted Collection comes from the prolific Reiner Knizia, designer of classics such as Tigris & Euphrates, Medici and Ra.

FLEET: THE DICE GAME

Maybe we’ve been watching too much Deadliest Catch, but there’s something jolly appealing about Eagle-Gryphon Games’ fishing-themed Fleet: The Dice Game. The small box title is exactly what it sounds like – a dice-chucking version of 2012 card game Fleet. Designed by Ben Pinchback and Matt Riddle, the duo behind the original Fleet, the 1-4 player game brings a new roll ‘n’ write mechanism to the same watery challenge – scoop the best fishing licenses, buy some boats and wharfside buildings, head out to sea with your brand new fleet and bring the biggest catches back to port. Already way over its modest goal, Fleet: The Dice Game’s crowdfunding campaign also gives backers the option of grabbing the Fleet card game while they’re in mood for fishin’ fun.
