This summer will see the release of new films from two of the anime industry’s most prodigious talents, Makoto Shinkai (Your Name, 5 Centimeters per Second) and Masaaki Yuasa (Lu over the Wall, Devilman Crybaby).
Telling the story of young man who moves to Tokyo and meets a girl with the mysterious power to stop rain, Makoto Shinkai’s Tenki no Ko: Weathering With You is due to hit Japanese cinemas on 19 July. Character design comes courtesy of Your Name’s Masayoshi Tanaka, while Atsushi Tamura (Mobile Suit Gundam: The Origin) and Hiroshi Takiguchi (The Garden of Words) serve as animation director and art director, respectively.
Meanwhile, Masaaki Yuasa’s surfing-themed romance Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara is slated for a 21 June theatrical release. The film follows teenage surfer girl Hinako and 21-year-old fireman Minato as they surf, hang out together and fall in love. The screenplay is by Reiko Yoshida, whose recent writing credits include A Silent Voice, Violet Evergarden and Liz and the Blue Bird, while experienced anime composer Michiru Ōshima handles the score.
