Japan Foundation unveils 2019 UK film tour programme

The Japan Foundation’s UK branch has announced its touring film programme for 2019. Titled ‘People Still Call It Love: Passion, Affection and Destruction in Japanese Cinema’, the season will feature 18 Japanese movies, including anime film Penguin Highway.

Opening at London’s ICA on 2 February, the Japan Foundation’s film festival will tour the country until 28 March, with screenings scheduled for Belfast, Bristol, Chester, Colchester, Derby, Dundee, Edinburgh, Exeter, Halifax, Inverness, Kendal, Leicester, Lewes, Manchester, Newcastle, Nottingham, Sheffield and Stirling.

In addition to Hiroyasu Ishida’s heart-warming debut feature Penguin Highway, the tour will feature a trio of live action manga adaptations – Destiny: The Tale of Kamakura, Pumpkin and Mayonnaise and The Scythian Lamb. Other films include My Friend ‘A’; Thicker Than Water; Tremble All You Want; Dear Etranger; Yurigokoro; Dad’s Lunch Box; Her Love Boils Bathwater; Blindly In Love; Born Bone Born; Where Chimneys Are Seen; Good Stripes; Three Stories of Love; Of Love & Law and Thermae Romae helmer Hideki Takeuchi’s ‘60s-set love letter to classic cinema, Tonight, at the Movies.
