Disney’s live-action reimaginings have seen success (The Jungle Book – $966 million worldwide), after success (Beauty and the Beast – $1.263 billion worldwide). Now the next animated film to receive the transition to live-action is Lilo & Stitch.
As revealed by the Hollywood Reporter, a live-action Lilo & Stitch is in the works, with the film set to be a live-action/ CG hybrid (given that Stitch is an experimental alien). There is currently no director, but the live-action reimagining will be scripted by newcomer Mike Van Waes. Producing the film will be Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who are also currently producing Disney’s live-action Aladdin.
The original film told of Experiment 626, a genetic experimental alien who has escaped from his planet only to crash land on Earth in the tropical Hawaiian islands. Mistaken for a dog, 626 is adopted by the young girl Lilo, naming her new ‘pet’ Stitch. However, both are unaware that alien bounty hunters are in pursuit. Released in 2002, at a time when most animated films were computer animated, it went on to earn over $270 million worldwide. It has since spawned three direct-to-video sequels, a TV series and a Japanese anime spin-off series.
Disney also has live-action reimaginings of Dumbo, Aladdin and The Lion King scheduled for release in 2019.
