Prospect trailer shows that serious sci-fi can be made on a minimal budget

The low-budget sci-fi movie Prospect premiered back in March at SXSW, where it received favorable reviews for its creativity and universe-building detail. Variety’s review even said “this is what the standalone Star Wars movies should feel like,” praise indeed.

Writers/directors Chris Caldwell and Zeek Earl present a feature-length remake of their 2014 short film of the same name. However, unlike the short, this one will be headlined by known names such as Pedro Pascal and Jay Duplass and the end result comes from the collective efforts of Depth of Field, The Realm and Ground Control production companies.

The official synopsis is as follows…

A teenage girl and her father travel to a remote alien moon, aiming to strike it rich. They’ve secured a contract to harvest a large deposit of the elusive gems hidden in the depths of the moon’s toxic forest. But there are others roving the wilderness and the job quickly devolves into a fight to survive. Forced to contend not only with the forest’s other ruthless inhabitants, but with her own father’s greed-addled judgment, the girl finds she must carve her own path to escape.

Joining Pascal and Duplass is Sophie Thatcher, Andre Royo, Sheila Vand and Anwan Glover.

The trailer immediately hits you with nice, authentic-looking production design, slightly reminiscent of the vastly underrated Outland (1981) all filtered through a pastel-colored lens, giving everything a retro feel. The story itself uses the historical premise of the Gold Rush as a theme and centres on space-traveling father/daughter duo Ezra (Pascal) and Cee (Thatcher) who have headed out to an alien moon with designs to mine a mineral called “aurelac” – again the play on gold.

However, just like almost any classic Gold Rush story, greed soon becomes the enemy, as an encounter with another group of prospectors begins a tense and deadly series of events.

This is an interesting role for Pascal; the former Game of Thrones actor is coming off movie appearances in The Equalizer 2 and Kingsman: The Golden Circle and will have a major role in the highly-anticipated DCEU sequel, Wonder Woman 1984.

Prospect is set to arrive at theaters on 2nd November.
