SEGA has announced that influential Dreamcast classics Shenmue and Shenmue 2 will be released on PS4, Xbox One and PC on August 21.

These new releases are not being dubbed remasters but rather the “definitive versions” of the first two Shenmue games, which see the protagonist Ryo Hazuki go on a quest to avenge his father’s death and uncover the secrets of a mysterious artefact called the Dragon Mirror.

In both games, support has been added for fully scalable screen resolutions, modern or classic control schemes, an updated UI and a choice of Japanese or English voiceovers. The PC version will also include a number of graphics options.

Pre-orders are now live from a number of retailers over on the official Shenmue website. Physical copies come with a double-sided poster as well as reversible cover art, which is nice.

Meanwhile, the development of Shenmue 3 continues to roll on quietly. After its announcement at E3 2015 (was it really that long ago now?) and the subsequent Kickstarter campaign that raised over $6 million, the project has been hit with a number of delays. The release date has recently been pushed back to 2019. Director Yu Suzuki has said the extra time has been needed as, “the game has become bigger and more beautiful than I initially expected.”

One day soon we may finally see this trilogy wrapped up.
