Warner Bros. Digital Studios subsidiary Machinima announced that they are developing a feature film based on the first-person scarefest F.E.A.R. As reported by the Hollywood Reporter, the film will be penned by screenwriter Greg Russo, who is also working on a live-action reboot of Mortal Kombat and Resident Evil.

“As a lifelong gamer, it’s an absolute honor to partner with Machinima, the preeminent provider of digital content to gamers worldwide,” said Russo. “F.E.A.R. holds a special place in my heart. I’m excited to bring my personal passion to this and future projects and can’t wait to see where our partnership goes from here.”

Machinima has already made a name for themselves when it comes to producing live-action adaptations of popular video games, having previously developed the series Mortal Kombat: Legacy and Street Fighter: Assassin’s First.

Developed by Monolith Productions, F.E.A.R was released in 2005 and also employed certain cinematic conventions, with influences from Japanese horror and action films like The Matrix. Players take control of the Point Man, a soldier in the First Encounter Assault Recon, a covert organisation that deals with paranormal or supernatural threats. The threat comes in the form of Alma, a young girl using her psychic powers to control an army of cloned soldiers. The game saw the release of two expansion packs and two sequels.
