Upcoming anime film Mirai of the Future is to get a Q4 cinema release in the UK and Ireland courtesy of Anime Limited, the Glasgow-based distributor has announced.

Given the working titles of Mirai and Mirai of the Future, the fantasy adventure is the latest movie from one of the biggest names working in anime today – Mamoru Hosoda, director of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars and Wolf Children.

Slated to hit Japanese cinemas on 20 July, Hosoda’s new movie sees spoiled little boy Kun meet Mirai – his (now not so) little sister who travels back in time from the future. What follows is a time-hopping adventure that spirits four-year-old Kun off down the decades to meet his mum as a little girl and his great-granddad as a young man.

“Mamoru Hosoda is one of the most talented and accessible directors in the anime industry, and Mirai looks set to be another wonderful addition to his hugely impressive body of work,” said Anime Limited boss Andrew Partridge. “We’re incredibly excited to be able to bring the joy and beauty of this director’s latest film to a broad audience around the UK in 2018″.

Hosoda is joined on the project by two long-time collaborators in animation director Hiroyuki Aoyama and Ayako Hata, both of whom worked on The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars and The Boy and the Beast. Meanwhile, producer Yuichi Saito and art directors Takashi Omori and Yohei Takamatsu all worked with him on The Boy and the Beast.
