Netflix appears to be cleverly riding on the Stephen King chatter that will be produced by the release of IT this week, with its trailer for King’s thriller Gerald’s Game.
Directed by Mike Flanagan (Ouija: Origin of Evil, Hush), it stars Carla Gugino (Watchmen) and Bruce Greenwood (JJ Abrams’ Star Trek) as Jessie and Gerald, a married couple who have turned to using handcuffs to spice up their sex life. When Gerald has a heart attack, Jessie realises she is unable to raise help in their secluded summer home location, and as the Netflix tagline says: “Breaking free will require more than keeping her sanity.”
The trailer does suggest some changes from Stephen King’s 1992 novel. In the book, Jessie accidentally kills her husband while she is handcuffed to the bed, while in the trailer Gerald goes into the heart attack having halted his advances and without being attacked by his wife.
