“As a kid I spent Saturday mornings sitting on the floor playing with LEGO and watching the DC Super Friends cartoons. I would imagine the people in my LEGO city would have super powers and could defeat any evil nemesis – which usually meant my sister’s dolls,” explains pop artist Nathan Sawaya with a faraway look in his eye.

“So this new collection of artwork is a dream come true for me. It is an honour to re-imagine these seminal characters and stories in a new way, through my medium of choice. Just like Superman, we all have our own story. This art collection is based on the elements of the journey of a super hero, including the moment in which we are all called to the adventure.”

Wandering around his exhibition, it’s the scale that really impresses. More than 120 works of art, created using more than two million LEGO bricks, have been packed inside an enormous temporary structure built on London’s South Bank. That includes a life-size Batmobile (5.5m long), which itself was built using half a million standard pieces.

Sawaya says thatThe Art of the Brick: DC Super Heroes is the world’s largest collection of artwork inspired by DC’s Justice League, including Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman, alongside such well-known DC super-villains the Joker, Harley Quinn and more, exploring more than 80 years of comic book superhero history. The art is broken up into a series of themed galleries, including a Batcave and a darker room containing a number of eerie LEGO skulls. Some of our favourite art sees classic DC covers brought to life.

While Buzz got a good look at the art, some video installations were only showing images but no sound yet, so visitors will get to hear about Sawaya’s process from the man himself, with no spoilers from us. There will also be the opportunity to play LEGO Dimensions on wall-mounted consoles. And in true LEGO style, it was also fun to see the final pieces being dropped into place in the exhibition as we toured it. Workman were busy finishing the café and shop area, while Batman appeared to have stashed boxes of prosecco in his lair!
