Welcome to Issue 53! We may take our usual eclectic wander through the worlds of movies, music, video games, comics and anime this issue, but it’s all about perfect pairings.

San Diego’s greatest geek show on Earth continues to be the chosen partner of every major new entertainment announcement and our reporter rounds up the big news from this year’s event on page 17. As part of that report from across the pond, we look at how the Final Fantasy franchise has once again paired with wider media to bring us the CG animated movie Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV. Read our exclusive chat with director Takeshi Nozue on page 19.

Anime and video games have had a close partnership over the years, even if they haven’t always made the best connections (and it’s a surprise to find that certain major franchises have barely dipped their toe into this water, check out page 28 to find out which games have been shy about getting animated).
In arguably this month’s greatest crossover, moody synth-rock musicians 65daysofstatic tell us how they came to pen the soundtrack to No Man’s Sky – the most anticipated video game of the last two years. Head to page 26 to hear guitarist Joe Shrewsbury explain how the process has changed the way the band writes music.

Squaring off against 65daysofstatic for the title of undisputed perfect pairing this issue is director Todd Williams. Putting him in charge of Stephen King’s Cell is a match made in heaven, as his previous work on character-based dramas and the Paranormal Activity horror franchise stand him in good stead (see page 68). Plus, it turns out when you pair him with MyM you get a couple of film fans seriously geeking out over movies. And that’s the best pairing of all.
