Legendary Entertainment, the production company behind such films as Man Of Steel, Interstellar and the upcoming Kong: Skull Island, is developing the game Life Is Strange into a digital series.

You read correctly: the iconic 2015 game Life is Strange – which mixes the past, the present and the future into a tapestry of butterfly effects, and which had some of the biggest YouTube gaming stars shedding a few tears (for all the right reasons) – is set to become a digital series courtesy renowned blockbuster movie makers Legendary Entertainment.

On the Life is Strange Twitter a member of staff put up a photo of our two favourite characters, Max and Chloe. with the caption, “We’re teaming up with @Legendary to develop a digital series based on #LifeisStrange!”

To make the announcement a little more official, the team took to its Tumblr blog to clarify the news, stating, “Much like many of you, both Legendary and we here at Square Enix & DONTNOD agree that Life Is Strange lends itself perfectly to live-action imaginings. While we can’t wait to see what Legendary will do with the digital series we don’t have any further details to share at this point in time.”

The game itself is a five-part episodic adventure that set itself aside from your normal story-based choice-and-consequence, or point-and-click games. The story revolves around Max, a photography student who saves her close friend Chloe with the discovery that she can rewind time. You follow the pair through some darker moments that take place in Arcadia Bay as they uncover the disturbing truth behind the sudden disappearance of a fellow student. Premonitions haunt Max as she struggles to understand the implications of her power (think of the movie The Butterfly Effect), as she quickly learns that changing the past can sometimes lead to a devastating future.

Withs a deep and meaningful story; it’s modern and simplistic, but very high on detailed visuals. Being able to rewind time and change specific events that happens in Max (and Chloe’s) life allows you to see the multiple possible outcomes on the characters you’ve grow attached to. There are even multiple endings depending on which paths you follow. The soundtrack is catchy and moving while the digital hand-painted artwork of Arcadia Bay is beyond stunning.

In an interview with MetroMichel Koch explains “There have been some talks between Square Enix and various production companies about getting the rights and talking about what could be done around the game. And so it’s been really, really recently that the deal with Legendary has been made. So we’re really excited about that, but we don’t know much yet. It’s a really, really early part in the creative process. But we’re really excited to see where this will be going… there are a lot of possibilities, because it will bring the world of Life Is Strange, the characters, to another audience. Because there are a lot of people who still don’t play video games or sometimes just want to relax on their couch and watch a TV show or movie. And bringing our characters to another audience is great. It might also push them to play the game after that, so it’s a great opportunity and exciting news.” And from the looks of the rest of the interview, the creators either don’t know much, or they are keeping very quiet about the whole ordeal.

As the team behind the atmospheric and thought-provoking game has said, there isn’t any more information about the live action version at the moment. But you can be sure as soon as any news is released, we will be here to share it with you. The Tumblr announcement also mentions that the first episode of Life Is Strange is downloadable entirely for free on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Steam (PC/Mac/Linux), PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. So if you want to re-play it or you want to check out the game to see why it’s so loved, be sure to take advantage.
