Respawn Entertainment has surprise-released Apex Legends – a new free-to-play battle royale game set within the Titanfall universe.

News of the multiplayer shooter had leaked a few days before the announcement, but now Apex Legends is officially out in wild to download on PS4, Xbox One and PC.

The quick blurb for Apex Legends is that it is a mix between a battle royale game and hero-based shooter. In groups of three, players descend upon a battlefield with their chosen characters and must try to outlive their opponents while gathering any equipment they find.

The new release has proven popular, with the game reaching the one million player milestone in just eight hours.

While it’s exciting to see a new release from Respawn, some will be sad to see that it’s not Titanfall 3. The devs have told Eurogamer that Apex Legends is their focus right now, leaving the future of the giant stompy robot franchise in limbo.

Apex Legends is available to download for free now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
