Sony Pictures has confirmed that the upcoming Monster Hunter movie will be released on September 4, 2020.

Writer-director Paul W.S. Anderson is teaming up with Resident Evil star Milla Jovovich once again for the adaptation of Capcom’s beast-slaying RPG series. After pumping out six trashy but somewhat entertaining zombie flicks it seems the pair are moving on to something entirely different.

Still, Monster Hunter fans are concerned, to say the least, following a series of set photos that Jovovich has been posting on social media during filming. They are far more military-themed than most expected, considering the series leans heavily on the fantasy side of things.

Here’s what Sony Pictures has to say about the film to Deadline: “Behind our world, there is another — a world of dangerous and powerful monsters that rule their domain with deadly ferocity. When Lt. Artemis (Jovovich) and her loyal soldiers are transported from our world to the new world, the unflappable lieutenant receives the shock of her life. In her desperate battle for survival against enormous enemies with incredible powers and unstoppable, terrifying attacks, Artemis will team up with a mysterious man (Tony Jaa) who has found a way to fight back.”

The idea of Jovovich being transported to a “new world” suggests that the military stuff is just the introduction to the film before all the scaly and giant-toothed monstrosities get involved. Here’s hoping it’s at least all a bit of a lark like the Resident Evil movies or good for a hangover day!

Monster Hunter will be released on September 4, 2020. The latest game in the series, Monster Hunter World, is available now on PS4, Xbox One and PC.
