Last night’s Oscars saw Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse do the animation double, with Sony’s superhero adventure adding an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature to January’s Golden Globe success.
Into the Spider-Verse saw off competition from Pixar’s Incredibles 2, Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet, Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs and Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai – the first non-Ghibli anime to be nominated for the prestigious award. The Sony Pictures and Marvel collaboration also broke Disney/Pixar’s stranglehold on the animation Oscar, with Brave, Frozen, Big Hero 6, Inside Out, Zootopia and Coco having racked up a six-year run of victories.
Co-directed by Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman and Bob Persichetti, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, a Brooklyn teen who develops superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. Meanwhile, Jake Johnson plays Miles’s mentor Peter B. Parker; Hailee Steinfeld appears as Gwen Stacy; Nicolas Cage as a 1930s noir Peter Parker; Kimiko Glenn as anime-style Peni Parker and John Mulaney as the porcine Peter Porker. The film also sees a cameo from the late, great Stan Lee.
