The series started off as a videogame collaboration between JRPG powerhouse Level-5 and animation legends Studio Ghibli, and now Ni No Kuni is set to have its own anime film adaptation.

Gematsu has reported that Warner Bros. Japan and Level-5 announced at a recent press conference that the Ni No Kuni anime will be released later this Summer in Japan. Level-5 CEO and the game’s original creator, Akihiro Hino, will write the screenplay. Meanwhile, Spirited Away and Porco Rosso animator Yoshiyuki Momose will sit in the director’s chair. OLM will handle animation duties.

In terms of story, the Ni No Kuni film will follow three friends named Kotona, Yuu and Haru as they travel back and forth between two parallel worlds. The film’s official website is now live if you want to see more, though do note it’s in Japanese.

Considering the talent involved and all of the artwork we’ve seen so far – plus all of the input from many who have previously worked on the Ni No Kuni games – this could make for a very strong film!

We’ll be sure to keep an eye out for any news of the film’s release outside of Japan.
