Sci-Fi blockbuster The Wandering Earth (Liu Lang Di Qiu) is currently the highest grossing film of 2019 at the worldwide box office. If some of you are wondering, “I’ve never even heard of this,” then don’t worry. You’ll soon be able to watch it after Netflix announced that they have picked it up.

Written and directed by Frant Gwo, the film is based on the novel by Liu Cixin and tells of humanity’s attempt to move Earth away from the sun, given its imminent explosion. After constructing thousands of giant engines, they manage to push the planet out of the solar system only to find themselves facing new unexpected dangers. The film stars Qu Chuxiao, Li Guangjie, Ng Man-tat and Zhao Jinmai and Wolf Warrior‘s Wu Jing.

Netflix announced in a press release that they have acquired the film, which will be released globally on their platform (excluding China where the streaming service is blocked). “Netflix is committed to providing entertainment lovers with access to a wide variety of global content,” said Jerry Zhang, Netflix’s Manager of Content Acquisition. “With its high-quality production and story-telling, we believe that The Wandering Earth will be loved by sci-fi fans around the world.”

Director Frant Gwo said of the acquisition, “Audiences from over 190 countries will soon meet The Wandering Earth on Netflix. I am glad that our movie can reach to people from different parts of the world. This is a movie created for the Chinese audience around the world, and it has been positively received since its premiere, we are very excited about it. To my surprise, this movie also resonate outside Mainland China. Netflix will translate it into 28 languages, enabling more viewers to enjoy it regardless of geographical and linguistic differences. I hope they will like it.”

Netflix did not offer a release date on when the film would arrive on their streaming service.

The Wandering Earth opened in China on 5 February 2019, to coincide with the Chinese New Year. It has also seen a limited release in the US, Australia and New Zealand. In a little over two weeks it has already earned over $600 million at the Chinese box office, making it the second highest grossing film in China, behind Wolf Warrior II. It is also enough to make it the highest grossing film of the year so far at the worldwide box office, far exceeding the likes of Glass (currently $236 million worldwide) and The Lego Movie 2 (currently $105 million worldwide).
