Do you still remember the rules when looking after a Mogwai? There is always talk of a third Gremlins film, however, it now appears that the franchise is set to return in animated form.

The news comes from Variety that an animated series in the works at Warner Bros. Television and Amblin Television, which is to air exclusively on WarnerMedia’s upcoming streaming service.

The series would actually be a prequel to the films and would focus on Mr. Wing (played in the films by Keye Luke) as the Chinese grandfather and original owner of the Mogwai, Gizmo. Episodes would feature Mr. Wing as a young man and his adventures with Gizmo. It also wouldn’t be much of a series if the Mogwai didn’t accidentally get wet, resulting in other Mogwai eating after midnight.

The series will be written and executive produced by Tze Chun, writer and director of the film Children of Invention. Chun has also written episodes of Gotham and Once Upon a Time, and is the co-founder of comic book publisher TKO Studios.

Gremlins was originally released back in 1984, earning over $150 million on an $11 million production budget. Directed by Joe Dante and written by Chris Columbus, its success spawned an equally successful sequel, as well as video games and toys.

As for when we’re likely to see the animated series, it was reported on Variety that original content for Warner’s streaming service is not set to appear till 2020.
