Penguin-tastic anime drama Penguin Highway will be screening at London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts on Saturday 9 February. The 4pm ICA showing is part of the Japan Foundation’s touring film programme for 2019, previewed here.

The first full-length movie from Studio Colorido (Typhoon Noruda), the Japan Academy Prize-nominated Penguin Highway adapts a novel by Tatami Galaxy author Tomihiko Morimi. Helmed by first-time director Hiroyasu Ishida, the coming-of-age fantasy follows precocious 10-year-old Aoyama and his pals as they attempt to unravel a highly unusual phenomenon – the mysterious arrival of a multitude of penguins in their sleepy little landlocked town. What has caused this surprise influx of cute seabirds …and how is it linked to young Aoyama’s first crush, the young dental assistant he calls ‘Onee-san’? Discover the truth by snagging tickets to the ICA’s weekend screening of Penguin Highway here.

Licensed in the UK by Glasgow-based distibutor Anime Limited, Penguin Highway will also be showing at Derby’s QUAD on 10 Feb; Sheffield’s Showroom Cinema on 21 Feb; Belfast’s Queen’s Film Theatre on 23 Feb; Leicester’s Phoenix on 24 Feb; Dundee Contemporary Arts on 27 Feb; Colchester’s Firstsite on 9 March; Kendal’s Brewery Arts Centre on 14 March and Nottingham’s Broadway on 23 March.
