It has won an Oscar for Best Animated Feature and a sequel is on the way. But if you still want more of Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, then it turns out that an extended cut of the film will be released on Blu-ray and UHD.

In an interview with Cinema Blend, the directors Rodney Rothman, Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey revealed that one of the special features fans can expect on the home video release is an Alternate-Universe Mode of the film.

Featuring scenes that were cut from the theatrical release, Rothman mentioned how the film had “an unusual amount of material at every stage of production.” These included storyboards, layouts and even finished animation that were eventually dropped. In describing the extended version he said, “The Alt-Universe Cut contains a bunch of that stuff that we chose not to put in the movie, but that in an alternate universe easily could have ended up in the movie. So, uh, that’s kind of the premise behind it.”

Just some of the extra footage includes more scenes with Miles Morales and his roommate Ganke Lee (which was dropped due to its similarities to Spider-Man: Homecoming), a Spider-Ham short (titled Caught in a Ham), and a scene with Miles and Peter Parker sitting on a billboard, talking. The latter is a scene that Persichetti described as “beautiful,” saying, “We were all so in love with it. And we were just like, ‘The movie is better without it.’ And so I think everybody will get to see that, and they’ll get to understand sort of the weird process that we go through where we make movies as if it’s just a script.”

In an interview with Collider, the directors talk about streamlining the ideas, with Rothman and Persichetti mentioning that there was one draft of the script that was 160 pages long, which would have resulted in a three-hour movie.

The film has already earned over $360 million worldwide and has yet to open in Japan (it’s released there next month).

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is released on DVD and Blu-ray in the US on 19 March 2019 and in the UK on 22 April 2019.
