Sony superhero adventure Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse scooped Best Animated Motion Picture at this weekend’s 76th annual Golden Globe Awards. The critically-acclaimed Sony Pictures and Marvel collaboration stars Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, a Brooklyn teen who develops superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive spider – only to discover that a whole bunch of ‘Spider-Men’ from parallel universes have swung by NY.

Co-directed by the trio of Peter Ramsey, Rodney Rothman and Bob Persichetti, the computer-animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse also stars Jake Johnson as Miles’s reluctant mentor Peter B. Parker; Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy; Nicolas Cage as a 1930s noir Peter Parker; Kimiko Glenn as anime-style Japanese teen Peni Parker and John Mulaney as Peter Porker, a spider who becomes Spider-Ham after being bitten by a radioactive pig. Meanwhile, the much-missed Stan Lee appears in a posthumous cameo.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse fought off competition that included Mamoru Hosoda time-travel movie Mirai – the first anime to be nominated for the award, although Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises was put forward for Best Foreign Language Film in 2013. Other animated features up for Best Animated Motion Picture were Pixar’s Incredibles 2; Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet and Wes Anderson sci-fi comedy Isle of Dogs.
