With Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo already dominating the gaming market, is there really room for another console? Slightly Mad Studios seems to think so, as the UK developer behind the Project CARS games announced that they are working on a new console.

The surprising news came when the company’s CEO Ian Bell took to Twitter to announce that, “The Mad Box is coming.” He then followed up, calling it, “the most powerful console ever built,” adding, “You want 4k, you want VR at 60FPS? You want a full engine for free to develop your games on it? You have it.” The comment on VR at 60FPS has caused some contention over on Twitter, with Bell later confirming, “We’re going 90 per eye.”

From talking to Variety, Bell revealed more details about the Mad Box, saying that they have the designs specced out and are talking with manufacturers of components. “It will support most major VR headsets and those upcoming and the specs will be equivalent to a ‘very fast PC 2 years from now.’”

As for the games, he said, “We plan to allow games from all developers, old and new. The ‘new’ possibly being many of those that benefit from our completely free development engine. It will be a stand alone console.” Asked on the console’s exclusive titles, Bell responded, “We think exclusives are ‘exclusionary’ but given that we’ll be shipping a cross platform engine to all developers it will be their choice. As of now we have no plans to pay developers ‘incentives’ to exclude other hardware vendors.”

Bell also revealed, “We have multiple investors already offering the required funding for us to see the product to completion, but it’s still early days and we’re looking at the best offers right now.”

Initially, there were no pictures of the console, but Bell recently tweeted out concept images of a somewhat PC tower looking console, featuring the company’s logo.

Bell has also been responding to tweets (even attracting Soulja Boy, who recently saw his foray into the console market come to an end). Bell mentioned that the name of the console, Mad Box, is a “work in progress name” (short for Media Arts Development Box).

The Mad Box console is expected to be on sale worldwide sometime in 2022.
