Mamoru Hosoda’s Mirai becomes the first non-Ghibli anime to be nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Oscars, with recent Golden Globe winner Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse also in contention for 2018’s animation crown.

The other three Best Animated Feature nominees also mirror this year’s Golden Globe nods, with Pixar’s Incredibles 2, Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet and director Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs also making the shortlist for the 91st Academy Awards, which will take place at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre on 24 February.

Made by Studio Chizu, Mamoru Hosoda-helmed time-travel drama Mirai seeks to replicate the success of Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away back in 2002, which remains the only Japanese-made film to scoop the Best Animated Feature award. Previous anime noms have all come from the Studio Ghibli stable, with Howl’s Moving Castle, The Wind Rises, The Tale of the Princess Kaguya, When Marnie Was There and Michaël Dudok de Wit’s The Red Turtle all making the shortlist since the accolade’s debut at the 74th Academy Awards.

While the non-Ghibli Mirai looks to be a long shot for Oscar glory, critically-acclaimed superhero adventure Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is an early favourite with the bookies. Starring Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, a Brooklyn teen who develops superpowers after being bitten by a radioactive spider, the Golden Globe-winning Sony Pictures and Marvel collaboration features a cast that includes the likes of Nicolas Cage, Hailee Steinfeld and Jake Johnson – not to mention a cameo by the late, great Stan Lee.
