Netflix has released the trailer for their upcoming action film Polar. Based on the webcomic by Víctor Santos, which was eventually collected and published by Dark Horse Comics, the film is directed by Jonas Åkerlund and adapts the first volume, Came From the Cold.

Duncan Vizla, aka The Black Kaiser (Mads Mikkelsen) was one of the best assassins. Now retired, his former employer considers him a liability to the firm. Now Vizla finds himself back in the game going head-to-head with an army of younger, faster, ruthless killers looking to take him out. However, things turn personal when they kidnap his neighbour, Camille (Vanessa Hudgens).

Santos mentioned that his comic was inspired by films such as Le Samurai, Tokyo Drifter and Point Blank. The trailer would suggest that Åkerlund has been influenced by the likes of John Wick, RED and The Equalizer with Mikkelsen’s Black Kaiser using an assortment of weapons against his fellow assassins, even resorting to a hammer and nail gun.

Adapted by Jayson Rothwell, the cast also includes Katheryn Winnick, Matt Lucas, Josh Cruddas, Anthony Grant, Lovina Yavari and Fei Ren.

In case you’re wondering, the music in the film is by deadmau5 and it’s their track Drama Free (featuring Lights) that is featured in the trailer.

Polar arrives on Netflix on 25 January 2018.
