This past weekend at the US box office saw M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass take the top spot, earning $40.5 million on its opening weekend. Most studios were too scared to compete against Glass, so withheld releasing their films. However, Broly, Goku and Vegeta have no fear and surprised everyone by having Dragon Ball Super: Broly open higher than anyone expected at the US box office.

As reported on Box Office Mojo, the film is distributed in the US by Funimation and got started on Wednesday, opening on 1250 screens. It earned $7 million on its opening day. However, it then had to lose some of those screens when Glass opened on Friday. Nevertheless, it powered on through with an estimated opening weekend take of $10.6 million; placing it at #3 (UPDATED – once weekend actuals came in, the film entered #4 with a take of $9.7 million) . It has earned a total of $21 million since it opened. After just five days, that’s enough to rank it as the third highest grossing anime at the US box office, behind Pokemon: The First Move and Pokémon The Movie: 2000.

Its takings in the US means that Dragon Ball Super: Broly has now earned a worldwide gross of $87 million. It stands to finish with a worldwide gross of over $100 million as it opens in the UK and Australia this week, and later in Germany, Spain, South Korea, Hong Kong and France.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly opens in the UK on 23 January 2019 courtesy of Manga Entertainment. Tickets, showtimes and locations can be found by visiting brolysback.co.uk.
