Dragon Ball Super: Broly has already taken £850,000 at the UK box office, distributor Manga Entertainment told MyM Buzz. Opening in cinemas last Wednesday, Broly is now the third highest anime earner ever for UK cinemas, ranking above the likes of Ponyo, The Wind Rises and Your Name, and trailing only Spirited Away and Howl’s Moving Castle.

Dragon Ball Super: Broly has been an extraordinary hit so far – landed in at No. 3 on opening day and with a big result this past weekend is edging towards £900K at the box office,” said Manga Entertainment marketing manager Andrew Hewson. “This is our most successful theatrical to date and I’d like to wholeheartedly thank the team here at Manga as well as the fans who have championed this film so passionately since the marketing campaign started! If the momentum keeps up over the next week the film could hit a milestone and become the UK’s highest grossing anime film of all time!”

Living up to its ‘anime event of the year’ tagline, Dragon Ball Super: Broly also opened strong across the Pond, taking nearly $29 million at the US box office to date. As in the UK, Broly’s Stateside performance was enough to make it the third most successful theatrical anime release, sitting below Pokemon: The First Movie and Pokemon: The Movie 2000.
