Boogiepop and Others, Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka and Kemono Friends 2 are among the new series joining Crunchyroll’s winter simulcast line-up, the anime streaming service has revealed. Other newly-announced shows making their debuts this season include Meiji Tokyo Renka, Wataten!: an Angel Flew Down to Me and Katana Maidens ~ Mini Toji.

Premiering today at 6:00am PT, Madhouse supernatural series Boogiepop and Others sees the studio return to the works of Kouhei Kadono following 2000’s Boogiepop Phantom. Adapting the first of Kadono’s light novel series, the show’s plot revolves around Shinyo Academy’s disappearing students and a creepy urban legend about a shinigami named Boogiepop.

Saturday 5 January sees the arrival of Katana Maidens ~ Mini Toji, Project No.9’s new 11-episode spin-off series featuring cute mini versions of the sword-wielding shrine maidens from last year’s Katana Maidens anime series and mobile game Katana Maidens Kizamishi Issen no Tomoshibi. Yuu Nobuta, who helmed naval drama High School Fleet, directs.

Tuesday 8 January ushers in Wataten!: an Angel Flew Down to Me, a school-set, yuri-flavoured sketch comedy from animation studio Doga Kobo. Directed by Daisuke Hiramaki, the 4-koma manga adaptation stars shy student Miyako Hoshino, a geeky shut-in who becomes totally smitten when she meets her lil’ sister Hinata’s cute classmate Hana.

Meiji Tokyo Renka debuts a day later on Wednesday 9 January. Helmed by Akitaro Daichi (Fruits Basket, Kamisama Kiss), the TMS Entertainment-made romance series tells the story of schoolgirl Mei Ayazuki, who is whisked back in time to Japan’s Meiji era. Lost and lacking her memory, Mei is befriended by writer Ōgai Mori and other historical characters.

Streaming from Friday 11 January, Liden Films’ Magical Girl Spec-Ops Asuka centres on high schooler Asuka Otori – aka, Magical Girl Rapture Asuka, ex-leader of an elite squad of magical girls who defended earth from invasion by cute-but-vicious supernatural beasties. When the world is threatened once more, the war-weary Asuka is drawn back into the fight alongside fellow magical girls Mia, Kurumi and Chisato.

The last of the newly-announced shows is also the most controversial, with animal girl series Kemono Friends returning to our screens on Monday 14 January. While the first season proved a sleeper hit, Kadokawa’s decision to fire its director, Tatsuki, sparked a fan backlash of truly epic proportions. New helmer Ryuichi Kimura sure has his work cut out…
