Aquaman has managed to do what Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Wonder Woman, Suicide Squad and Justice League could not – earn over $1 billion worldwide. It has become the 37th film to reach the milestone.

Aquaman has currently taken $287.8 million at the US box office, making it one of the top 100 earners in the US. But its international gross currently stands at an almighty $732.4 million (the majority of that comes from China, where it has earned over $280 million). That brings its worldwide gross to $1.02 billion, which currently places it as the 36th highest grossing film worldwide.

It is also the second highest earning DC Comics film, behind Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, which earned $1.084 in 2012. However, at the rate the King of Atlantis is going, it will likely surpass this before the end of January. Aquaman has also yet to open in Japan, where it will be released on 8 February.

Jason Momoa took to Instagram to say “mahalo” to those that helped turn Aquaman into a billion dollar success, saying, “My success is from my fans. All my aloha to everyone that had a hand in making this movie. Mahalo Zack for choosing me and mahalo James for creating this beautiful world.”

For director James Wan, this is his second film to earn over $1 billion worldwide, the first being Furious 7, which took over $1.5 billion in 2015. As reported on Deadline, Wan commented on the milestone, saying, “Firstly, Massive love and thank you to the fans and audiences around the world. Humbled by the way you’ve embraced Aquaman and how it has resonated on a global scale. I’ll forever be indebted to Jason for turning Aquaman into one of the coolest, cinematic superheroes ever, and becoming the gold standard for this character for generations to come. Huge thank you to the amazing cast — Amber, Patrick, Nicole, Yahya, Willem, Temuera, Dolph, Ludi — for breathing life into our beloved characters. And, of course, this movie wouldn’t be what it is without the incredible achievement of everyone involved, from the heads of department to every single crew member, who demanded utmost excellence in helping design and create this cinematic experience.”

Warner Bros Worldwide Distribution President, Ron Sanders, also added, “We’re thrilled audiences around the world have embraced Aquaman in such a big, big way. Jason, the filmmakers and the team at DC have delivered a film that people love, and we are so appreciative of their support.”
