Top Gun: Maverick, new set pics show Tom Cruise, Miles Teller…and a F-14

With all the Mission: Impossible – Fallout promotion duties out of the way for Tom Cruise, he can now focus on the principal photography for Top Gun: Maverick.

And new pics show that shooting has moved to Lake Tahoe in California with Cruise fully outfitted for flight while running around in the snow.

In addition, according to Hollywood Pipeline, a F-14 Tomcat that was towed into the Tahoe area not long ago is being used for the production, with shots emerging of Cruise and the production crew crawling over the retired fighter as it sits in what appears to be a military-like hardened aircraft shelter.

We have already seen Maverick’s blue striped Super Hornet, but the inclusion on an F-14, and in this alpine setting, in particular, makes you wonder what the plot for this movie is really going to look like.

This set of scenes almost seems as if it is part of a caper of sorts, with Cruise and Miles Teller—who plays Goose’s son—possibly stealing the Tomcat in question. We really can’t be sure, but the jet also has what looks like a phoenix painted under its canopy, so exactly who owns this F-14 and where the setting is supposed to take place in relation to the greater plot is puzzling. We can say one thing for certain, that bird logo has meaning to the film as the F-14 didn’t have it when it was towed to the set.

Cruise can be seen with his traditional “Maverick VF-1” flight helmet (wonder if they’ll still use the old HGU-33/P helmets…) and Teller seems to have a call sign that ends in “…ster” so that could be almost anything.

Earlier set photos showed cruise in some sort of a black pressure suit, so maybe Maverick executed a very high altitude skydive into the area to steal the Tomcat. Cruise loves to incorporate jumps into his action films, although he has just done one in Mission: Impossible – Fallout, so twice in two movies might be a bit repetitive.

There’s also a photo of a tank…

And finally…another, US pilot, but we don’t know who…

Paramount Pictures has pushed the Top Gun 2 release date back by a full year, opting to release the sequel on June 26, 2020 instead of its originally planned July 12, 2019.

According to Variety, the move is being made to allow the production time to create “incredible” flight sequences so the film can be truly awesome.

Top Gun: Maverick reteams Cruise with Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski on the movie, which has been in development for years. Originally, Top Gun director Tony Scott was going to reprise his director duties. When Scott died, the future of the project was unclear for a bit, but clearly Cruise and producer Jerry Bruckheimer were passionate about getting Top Gun 2 made.
