Bird-themed board game Wingspan has been unveiled as the next title to be published by Stonemaier Games, the company behind Kickstarter hit Scythe and wine-making game Viticulture. Described as a ‘medium-weight, card-driven, engine-building board game’, Wingspan will see 1-5 players competing to attract the best birds to their aviary.

Designed by Elizabeth Hargrave, Wingspan is certainly a looker, with components including a deck of 170 beautifully-illustrated bird cards, player boards depicting forest, grassland and wetland habitats, 75 little egg miniatures and a cute birdhouse dice tower. Gameplay revolves around adding birds to habitats to extend chains of powerful combos – although your feathered friends will also require the right food. You can check out the full rules – including a solo variant – here.

Pre-orders for Wingspan will be available from Stonemaier Games on 2 January and company co-founder Jamey Stegmaier says that copies have been sent in advance to the UK so that British board gamers can avoid customs charges. Multiple expansions for Wingspan featuring birds from beyond North America have also been teased, with the publisher hoping to explore Europe, Africa, Asia, South America and Australia/NZ.
