Following a brief teaser back in back in November, a new trailer has arrived has for Toei’s live-action adaptation of Back Street Girls: Gokudols. A new poster also appeared via Natalie.

Based on Jasmine Gyuh’s manga, it tells of three yakuza gangsters: Kentaro Yamamoto, Ryo Tachibana, and Kazuhiko Sugihara. They end up in a dilemma after ruining a business deal. Their boss gives them a choice – they can either kill themselves, or they can undergo a sex change operation and earn back the money they lost by becoming female idols. They choose the latter. After a year of training and medical operations, they become Airi Yamamoto, Mari Tachibana and Chika Sugihara, the perfect idol group Gokudols, debuting to surprising success.

The trailer features the characters Airi, Mari and Chika introducing themselves while striking a cheerful idol pose. As well as performing and singing for their fans, they’re also seen drinking, smoking and slashing away at gangsters with a samurai sword.

Directed by Keinosuke Hara and adapted for the screen by Shoichiro Masumoto, the film stars Jin Shirasu as Kentaro and Natsumi Okamoto as Airi; Reiya Masaki as Ryo and Ruka Matsuda as Mari, and Masato Hanazawa as Kazuhiko and Akane Sakanoue as Chika.

Back Street Girls first appeared in Young Magazine in March 2015. It was adapted into an anime series that aired in Japan back in July and has since made its way onto Netflix.

Back Street Girls: Gokudols opens in Japan on 8 February 2019.
