Netflix has released the official English-subbed trailer for new martial arts anime Baki, which the streaming giant is set to debut in the West on 18 December following the finale of the 26-episode show’s run on Japanese TV.

Adapted from Keisuke Itagaki’s Baki the Grappler, the series focuses on the manga’s ‘Most Evil Death Row Convicts’ story arc, which sees martial arts champion Baki training hard to surpass his father Yujiro ‘Ogre’ Hanma as the strongest fighter in the world when five ultra-violent death row inmates bust out of prison and descend on Tokyo to take him on.

Produced by TMS Entertainment, Baki is directed by Toshiki Hirano (Vampire Princess Miyu, Magic Knight Rayearth) and stars Nobunaga Shimazaki – in the news lately as the voice of Yuki Sohma in the rebooted Fruits Basket – as titular bruiser Baki Hanma. The new Baki can also be considered a reboot, with Itagaki’s manga having already garnered an OVA back in 1994 and two 24-epsiode television series in 2001.
