Huh, what was that noise? Oh, turns out IDW Games and Konami have announced Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game.

In one of the more surprising tabletop and videogame crossovers we’ve seen for some time, Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game is a cooperative miniatures board game that follows the story of the iconic 1998 PS1 hit.

Players will be able to take on the role of Solid Snake, Meryl Silverburgh, Dr. Hal “Otacon” Emmerich and Gray Fox as they stealth their way around multiple scenarios completing a range of different objectives. IDW Games promises that Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game will have a “highly dynamic A.I. system and sandbox gameplay” so that you’ll be able to repeat missions multiple times but they will play out differently.

Game designer Emerson Matsuuchi had this to say about the game: “I’m probably the biggest fan of Metal Gear Solid. Ever since playing the first Metal Gear Solid, it has forever altered the way I view games. I’m excited to be able to capture the tactical stealth action that is the hallmark of the franchise as well as create a new experience and story for the Snake fans. Age hasn’t slowed him down one bit.”

It all sounds mightily interesting and will surely pique the curiosity of the many Metal Gear Solid fans out there. Whether Konami and Hideo Kojima’s classic will translate well into a board game, though, we’ll have to find out later next year when IDW Games takes it on the road at E3 2019, San Diego Comic Con, Gen Con and a host of other events.

Metal Gear Solid: The Board Game is scheduled for release in 2019.
