Acclaimed anime director Mamoru Hosoda’s latest film Mirai has been nominated for a Golden Globe. The charming fantasy drama about a young boy’s adventures with his time-travelling sister is in the running for Best Animated Motion Picture at the 76th annual Golden Globe Awards, which will take place on 6 January.

Made by Studio Chizu, Mirai is the first anime to be nominated for the award, although Hayao Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises was put forward for Best Foreign Language Film in 2013. Mirai is up against Pixar’s Incredibles 2; Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet; Columbia, Sony Pictures and Marvel collab. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and another Japan-set animation, auteur director Wes Anderson’s stop-motion sci-fi comedy Isle of Dogs.

The seventh full-length feature by the director of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, Summer Wars and Wolf Children, Mirai was also the ever Japanese animated film to get its world premiere at Cannes, screening as part of the 50th anniversary edition of Directors’ Fortnight. In the UK, Mirai made its debut at the prestigious BFI London Film Festival in October, with Anime Limited handling the movie’s wider theatrical release.
