The Resident Evil movies have been one of the most successful video game to movie translations, spawning a franchise of six films that have earned over $1.2 billion worldwide for Constantin Film and Sony’s Screen Gems. You can’t leave that dead, which is why Constantin Film have announced a director for their live-action reboot.

As reported by Variety, director Johannes Roberts (of The Strangers: Prey at Night, 47 Metres Down and Storage 24) will write and direct a new live-action Resident Evil film, with an entirely new cast. Last year, Deadline reported that the reboot also has Greg Russo as writer and James Wan as producer. The film will start production sometime in 2019, following the release of Roberts’ film 47 Meters Down: The Next Chapter.

While it is not yet known if the reboot will be based on any of the early video games, with Capcom’s survival horror games continuing, there is clearly plenty of material to work from. It is also possible for the reboot to carry on as an alternate story parallel to what took in the previous films with Milla Jovovich’s character Alice.
