Upcoming Final Fantasy 15 DLC cancelled and Tabata leaves Square Enix

In an unprecedented update, Square Enix announced that three of the four previously announced DLC packs for Final Fantasy 15 have been cancelled. Meanwhile, the game’s director, Hajime Tabata, has quit Square Enix to start his own business.

OK, let’s take these one at a time. So, first up, Final Fantasy 15 Episode Ardyn will still be released. Focusing on the enigmatic and somewhat frustrating villain from the main game, the DLC will be released in March 2019. Square Enix debuted the new trailer below and revealed a short anime Final Fantasy 15 Episode Ardyn – Prologue will accompany the release.

Elsewhere, though, episodes based on the characters Aranea, Lunafreya and Noctis have all been cancelled. They had all been scheduled to release throughout 2019 but have now been scrapped completely. A new standalone edition of Final Fantasy 15 Comrades, the game’s multiplayer mode, will still launch on December 13 for PS4 and Xbox One.

Lastly, a collaboration event between Final Fantasy 15 and online MMORPG Final Fantasy 14 has been announced. Available for free to all Final Fantasy 15 owners, the event will add a new quest to the game called ‘Adventurer from Another World’ that sees Noctis go on a journey with a Miqo’te – a cat-like race from Final Fantasy 14 – to defeat Garuda. Completing the quest will reward you with Final Fantasy 14-themed costumes for Noctis and the gang.

Now, onto that employment news. Final Fantasy 15 director, Hajime Tabata, did not appear in the latest update video. Instead, he offered a brief statement explaining his decision to move on from Luminous Productions and Square Enix.

“In regards to my next endeavours and near future, I have a project that I truly wish to solidify as my next challenge after FFXV. For that reason, I have decided to leave my current position and start my own business in order to achieve my goal,” he wrote.

Wow, well that all came out of nowhere. It’s a little bit of a shame for the legacy of Final Fantasy 15 to end this way after the massive recovery job pulled on the game over the last decade or so. Even though it launched in a less-than-wonderful state, the work done over the last few years showed Square Enix was determined to deliver something as close to their original vision as possible to the fans – and Tabata’s efforts were a huge part of that.

Nevertheless, we now look to the future to see what’s next for the Final Fantasy series. A new expansion to Final Fantasy 14 is expected to be announced at Fan Fest later this month, while re-releases of classic entries are coming to Xbox One and Switch. The big question, though: is there a new main numbered title on the horizon?
