Sony Pictures Animation’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse isn’t even out yet, but they know they’ve got a hit on their hands. According to the Hollywood Reporter, they are already working on a sequel and a spin-off.
Sony is looking to widen the web of its Spider-Man franchise. Spider-Man Homecoming earned $880 million worldwide and Venom, while still on release, has currently earned over $820 million worldwide.
The animated Into the Spider-Verse sequel is expected to lead with Miles Morales and will be directed by Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra), from a script by The Expendables and Wonder Woman 1984 screenwriter, David Callaham.
A spin-off film that involves the female superheroes in the Spider-Man universe is also in the works. So we could be looking at a film with Spider-Woman, Spider-Gwen, Madame Web, Spider-Girl and Silk. Lauren Montgomery (Batman: Year One and Voltron) is in negotiations to direct from a script by Bek Smith (Zoo).
Into the Spider-Verse producers Amy Pascal, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are also expected to return to produce on the new projects.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse opens in the UK on 12 December 2018 and in the US on 14 December 2019.
