Netflix is to produce a 10-episode live-action adaptation of beloved sci-fi anime Cowboy Bebop. According to the streaming giant’s @NXOnNetflix Twitter account, the upcoming series’ first episode will be written by Thor: Ragnarok’s Chris Yost, while original anime director Shinichiro Watanabe will be brought on to the show as a consultant.

Cowboy Bebop’s live-action incarnation will be a co-production between Netflix and Tomorrow Studios (a partnership between Teen Wolf producer Marty Adelstein and ITV Studios), with Netflix handling physical production. Andre Nemec, Josh Appelbaum, Jeff Pinker and Midnight Radio’s Scott Rosenberg are listed as showrunners/executive producers, while Yasuo Miyakawa, Masayuki Ozaki and Shin Sasaki from Sunrise – the studio that made the anime series – will also serve as executive producers.

First broadcast in 1998, the jazz-infused, noir and western-influenced Cowboy Bebop charts the space-faring misadventures of bounty hunter Spike Spiegel, ex-cop Jet Black, sexy con artist Faye Valentine, genius hacker girl Ed and hyper-intelligent hound Ein aboard the good ship Bebop.
