Classic mecha anime Neon Genesis Evangelion is coming to Netflix this spring, the streaming service’s @NXOnNetflix Twitter account has announced. All 26 episodes of the acclaimed 1995 TV series will be available worldwide on Netflix, along with a pair of feature-length instalments – The End of Evangelion, which provides an alternate finale to the television show, and series recap movie Death(True)2.

Out-of-print in the West since the closure of ADV Films, Hideaki Anno’s hugely influential Neon Genesis Evangelion is both one of the best known of all giant robot anime and a postmodern deconstruction of the genre, exploring themes such as religion and philosophy, psychological trauma and the director’s own struggles with depression.

Set in a post-apocalyptic 2015, the studio Gainax series opens with the city of Tokyo-3 under attack from mysterious giant-sized beings known as Angels. Evangelion’s protagonist, meek teenager Shinji Ikari, is chosen to pilot an equally enormous Evangelion mecha – humanity’s best hope against the enigmatic Angels. Piloting Eva units alongside Shinji are two teen girls – the seemingly-emotionless Rei Ayanami and fiery redhead Asuka Langley Soryu.
