Warner Bros. has released the first trailer and poster for the upcoming Pokémon: Detective Pikachu. Also, do click to enlarge the poster, because there’s an amazing level of Pokémon related references in there.

Based on the Nintendo 3DS game of the same name, the film follows Tim Goodman (Justice Smith), who is looking for his missing father, Harry (Paul Kitson). Helping Tim with the investigation is Harry’s former Pokémon partner, Detective Pikachu (Ryan Reynolds), a wise-cracking, super-sleuth who is a puzzlement even to himself. After finding out that they are uniquely equipped to communicate with each another, Tim and Pikachu join forces, chasing clues together through the neon-lit streets of Ryme City.

The trailer was to make its premiere attached to the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, but Warner has decided to reveal Detective Pikachu earlier than expected. There’s a lot going on in this trailer that you won’t catch upon your first viewing. There are Pokémon posters, wild Pokémon walking around Ryme City, a scary looking Psyduck, a Mr. Mime joke that actually works and an exploding car.

Directed by Rob Letterman (of Goosebumps and Monsters Vs. Aliens), the film also stars Kathryn Newton as junior reporter Lucy (glimpsed in the trailer with her Psyduck), and Ken Watanabe as Lt. Yoshida. As the first live-action film from the Pokémon franchise, it is only the second time Nintendo has allowed one of their video games to be adapted into a live-action Hollywood film (the first being Super Mario Bros. back in 1993).

Pokémon: Detective Pikachu opens in the UK and US on 10 May 2019.
