2019 will see Disney release three remakes from their back catalogue. Dumbo is released in March, followed by Aladdin in May. The third is The Lion King, which lands in July, and Disney has released the first teaser.

A young lion prince, Simba, must overcome betrayal and tragedy after his wicked uncle, Scar, plots to kill King Mufasa and take over the kingdom. With the help of his friends, can Simba assume his rightful place on Pride Rock?

Disney debuted the teaser during an ad break on the NFL’s Thanksgiving game on US TV. With a mix of CG and live action, the teaser is essentially a shortened version of the teaser to original animated film.

The original film was released back in 1994 and earned over $960 million worldwide. It held the record for being the highest grossing animated film of all time until the release of Toy Story 3 in 2010.

Directed by Jon Favreau (who also directed Disney’s live-action The Jungle Book), the film features the voices of Donald Glover Jr as Simba, James Earl Jones returning to voice Mufasa, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter as Nala, Seth Rogen as Pumbaa, Billy Eichner as Timon, and Chiwetel Ejiofor as Scar.

The Lion King is released in the UK and US on 19 July 2019.
