The changes going on with Series 11 of Doctor Who have spiralled out into its scheduling. First, there was the move from airing on a Saturday to Sunday; now it’s been announced that it’ll bypass Christmas Day, settling for a New Years Day special instead.

The move changes what has been a tradition since 2005, with the BBC broadcasting a special festive episode on 25 December. However, it’s not yet known if this move will be a one-off or a new fixture.

This is the official synopsis for the New Years Day special:

“As the New Year begins, a terrifying evil is stirring, from across the centuries of Earth’s history. As the Doctor, Ryan, Graham and Yaz return home, will they be able to overcome the threat to planet Earth?”

“We’re delighted the Doctor and her companions will be welcoming BBC One audiences into 2019 with this exciting new episode,” said Charlotte Moore, BBC’s Director of Content. “The Doctor’s fans are in for a special treat on the first day of the new year.”

“We’re thrilled to be starting the New Year with a bang on BBC One,” said showrunner Chris Chibnall. “Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor and friends face a terrifying alien threat in an action packed, hour long special adventure for all the family.”

The New Years Day episode is written by Chris Chibnall and directed by Wayne Yip (The Lie of the Land and Empress of Mars).
