The first trailer for Netflix’s Bird Box has been released, which presents an end of the world scenario where the only way to survive is to keep your eyes shut.

Based on Josh Malerman’s novel, the post-apocalyptic thriller focuses on Malorie (Sandra Bullock) and her two children, who find themselves trying to outrun a mysterious force that is wiping out the population. All that’s known is that if you see it, you take your life. As survivors succumb to the threat, Malorie decides to take her children to the one place left that may offer sanctuary. But in order to make it there alive, they’ll have to take the perilous journey blindfolded.

With shades of The Mist, I Am Legend and A Quiet Place, the trailer shows off some tense moments (one incorporating a car’s parking sensors), blindfolded activity (such as rowing a boat), and gives away a character’s death.

Directed by Susanne Bier and adapted by Eric Heisserer, the film also stars Trevante Rhodes, Sarah Paulson, John Malkovich, Rosa Salazar, Parminder Nagra and Colson Baker.

Bird Box arrives on Netflix on 21 December 2018.
