Densha Otoko (aka Train Man) has seen numerous manga adaptations, as well as a Japanese TV series and film. Now it’ll be adapted for US TV… as a musical.

Based on the supposed true story of near 30,000 posts on a 2channel thread, a self-confessed otaku posts about saving a young woman being pestered by a drunk man causing a nuisance on a train. The act earns him the nickname Densha Otoko (Train Man) and he is surprised when days later the woman thanks him with a set of expensive Hermès cups. The socially challenged Densha Otoko then posts to 2channel asking for advice in order to start a relationship with the woman.

As reported on Deadline, the musical will be based on the original TV series that was produced by Fuji TV, having sold the rights for their first US remake, headed by Vertigo Entertainment, Amuse Group USA and Global Road Television. Attached to the project are Everybody Loves Raymond creator-producer Phil Rosenthal and writer-executive producer Tucker Cawley. Adam Shankman (Hairspray and Bedtime Stories) is also onboard to direct.

“I couldn’t be more excited to be working with this fantastic team,” said Shankman. “Phil and Tucker have created some of the most hilarious and heartfelt work on television, and I cannot wait to work together on this project that so speaks to our collective hopes, dreams, successes and failures. The concept of ‘Train Man’, his public and private faces, his fears and foibles, is so ripe for serialization and musicalization. This unique and massively popular world is fertile ground for original storytelling.”
