Blizzard calms big Diablo announcement rumours at BlizzCon

BlizzCon – the celebration of all things Blizzard Entertainment – is just a matter of weeks away and many of us are anticipating some big announcements from the developer at this year’s show. It looks like we may have to calm ourselves down a little about any potential Diablo news, however, as Blizzard has released a statement playing down the extent of any related announcements at the show.

“BlizzCon 2018 is almost here and we’ve seen a lot of rumors flying around about our plans for Diablo at the show. These are very exciting times—we currently have multiple teams working on different Diablo projects and we can’t wait to tell you all about them…when the time is right,” a blog post reads on the official Diablo website.

The statement is likely referencing the fevered speculation that Blizzard was set to reveal Diablo 4 at the show. Fans have noticed in the official BlizzCon schedule that a Diablo session has been planned for immediately after the opening ceremony, suggesting that the developer would be unveiling more about the game on the first day of the show. Sadly, it sounds like it may not be the case for now.

The post continues: “While we won’t be ready to announce all of our projects, we do intend to share some Diablo-related news with you at the show.”

At least that’s something, then. Outside of an entirely new game in the series, it’s difficult to guess what the news could be from BlizzCon. Another Diablo 3 expansion seems unlikely, though it could be information on a new class. Diablo 3 is scheduled for release on Switch on November 2nd, so perhaps there will be one final announcement related to that launch?

Anyway, all this rumour quashing could be a massive ruse from Blizzard. Back in March, a cryptic Tweet suggested Diablo 3 was coming to Nintendo Switch and Blizzard denied they had anything to announce at the time. That’s technically correct – they waited until five months later to do so – but it still shows how they might be looking to mislead again!

BlizzCon begins on November 2nd at 6pm GMT with an hour-long opening ceremony and concludes on November 3rd.
