The barbarians are at the gates in Pandemic: Fall of Rome, Z-Man Games’ newly-announced standalone spin-off of classic co-operative board game Pandemic.

Designed by Matt Leacock and Paolo Mori, Fall of Rome is due out this Q4 and trades Pandemic’s traditional disease control for barbarian battling, casting the game’s 1-5 players in the role of Roman leaders attempting to defend the Empire from invasion by hostile tribes.

As Anglo-Saxons, Goths, Vandals and Huns cut a swathe of destruction through the provinces on their way to sack Rome itself, players will need to collect sets of matching-coloured cards to forge alliances with individual tribes – converting them into Roman allies and pitting them against their barbarian brothers in battles that use a set of custom dice.

According to Z-Man Games, Pandemic: Fall of Rome will feature a special solo mode, with a lone player ruling as the emperor and commanding three different roles to try and protect the city from the rampaging hordes. The game will also include a Roma Caput Mundi mode to provide seasoned players with an additional challenge; adding more Revolt cards to the deck and enforcing a law banning Roman legions from the capital itself.
