More details have been revealed about the series of short, standalone episodes, Star Trek: Short Treks first announced by CBS at San Diego Comic-Con in July.

CBS describes them as short stories “that delve deeper into the Star Trek: Discovery universe”. The episodes will roll out monthly, on the first Thursday for the next four months and will each focus on three characters from Star Trek: Discovery.

The first episode Runaway, that airs on 4th October, will follow Tilly (Mary Wiseman) onboard the USS Discovery as she encounters an unexpected visitor in need of help. However, this unlikely pair may have more in common than meets the eye.

The second episode Calypso, that airs on 8th November, will star a new character, Craft (Aldis Hodge), who wakes up in the sick bay of an abandoned ship and his only companion is a computer interface.

The third episode The Brightest Star, that airs on 6th December 6th, will follow Saru (Doug Jones) prior to his time in Starfleet. “Before he was the first Kelpien to join Starfleet, Saru lived a simple life on his home planet of Kaminar with his father and sister. Young Saru, full of ingenuity and a level of curiosity uncommon among his people, yearns to find out what lies beyond his village, leading him on an unexpected path.”

In the final episode The Escape Artist, that airs on 3rd January 2019, we see that Harry Mudd (Rainn Wilson) is back to his old tricks of stealing and double-dealing, finds himself in a precarious position aboard a hostile ship — just in time to try out his latest con.

You may remember, the Syfy channel (formerly Sci-Fi Channel and Sci-Fi) released three series of Battlestar Galactica webisodes, including The Resistance (2006), The Face of the Enemy (2008) and Blood and Chrome (2011) that added interesting additional information to many of the show’s storylines. CBS could achieve the same potentially interesting result – telling a story that might not necessarily fit into the standard TV episode runtime, but which might serve as a useful point to add to a character or situation.

“There is no shortage of compelling stories to tell in the Star Trek universe that inspire, entertain, and either challenge our preconceived ideas or affirm long-held beliefs, and we are excited to broaden the universe already with Short Treks,” Kurtzman said.

“Each episode will deliver closed-ended stories while revealing clues about what’s to come on in future Star Trek: Discovery episodes,” he added. “They’ll also introduce audiences to new characters who may inhabit the larger world of Star Trek.”

Sadly however, for the time being at least, these are only going to be available in the US, as Netflix won’t be showing them in the UK and nor will the Space Channel in Canada.

The first season of Star Trek: Discovery is available to stream in its entirety on CBS All Access in the US and Netflix in the UK. Season one is available to pre-order on Blu-ray and DVD and will be available on November 13th. Season two is now filming in Toronto and will premiere in January 2019.
