New footage of Bioware’s Anthem reveals more of the game’s single-player story

For a while now we’ve been a bit confused with how Anthem, the latest sci-fi shooter RPG from Mass Effect creators Bioware, will combine its Destiny-like shared world experience with a rich, single-player story. The new trailer goes some way to address those questions.

Lead by a marketing jargon slogan “Our World, My Story”, the trailer details how you will be able to forge your own personal story through the characters you meet and the choices you make. For example, within the home hub of Fort Tarsis, you’ll be able to form bonds with your pit crew, who maintain the Javelin mech suit you use in combat out in the wide world.

It sounds a lot like hanging out with the crew on the Normandy from the Mass Effect series, as you can take the time to get to know them to find out more about their pasts and their hopes for the future.

We also learn about “shadowy figures with questionable character” who you can bump into while exploring Fort Tarsis. Again, your decisions throughout the game mean these encounters may or may not happen.

It all sounds like classic Bioware, though quite how comfortably it’ll fit together with the multiplayer-focused action in the other half of the game remains to be seen. We still remain cautiously optimistic.

Anthem is scheduled for release on PS4, Xbox One and PC on February 21, 2019.
