It’s been ten years since Avatar: The Last Airbender came to an end, but it’s set to return to Netflix, as a new live-action series.

As reported on Deadline, production on the new live-action series begins in 2019. Netflix is bringing onboard the show’s original creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, to serve as executive producers and showrunners. There are no casting details, but an image has been released, concept art by John Staub featuring sky bison Appa and, while too small to make out, we can assume it’s Aang.

“We’re thrilled for the opportunity to helm this live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender,” said DiMartino and Konietzko. “We can’t wait to realize Aang’s world as cinematically as we always imagined it to be, and with a culturally appropriate, non-whitewashed cast. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to build upon everyone’s great work on the original animated series and go even deeper into the characters, story, action, and world-building. Netflix is wholly dedicated to manifesting our vision for this retelling, and we’re incredibly grateful to be partnering with them.”

“We are committed to honoring Bryan and Mike’s vision for this retelling,” said Melissa Cobb, Netflix’s VP on Kids & Family Content. She also added that Netflix are “thrilled to support them on creating a live-action event series, bringing Aang’s epic world of elemental magic to life for global audiences.”

The original Avatar: The Last Airbender series ran on Nickelodeon for three seasons from 2005 to 2008. It follows Aang, a new Avatar, who must take on his responsibilities as an Airbender after the nations of the world find themselves at war. There was a sequel series, The Legend of Korra, which ran on Nickelodeon from 2012 to 2014. There was also a movie adaptation by M. Night Shyamalan, The Last Airbender, which was released in 2010 and was not well received by critics or fans.
