Sega’s Mega Drive Mini delayed to 2019

When Sega announced the Mega Drive Mini back in April, it was suspected that they would launch it in Japan around October 2018, to tie in with the console’s 30th anniversary. It has now been revealed that the mini console has been delayed.

As reported on Gematsu, Sega announced on Twitter that the Mega Drive Mini will now be released some time in 2019. Noting the response from overseas fans interested in the console, Sega revealed that they will launch a Genesis Mini for the US and a Mega Drive Mini for Europe, and that they are planning a simultaneous release.

In a second tweet, highlighting the reason for the delay, Sega apologised and revealed that in order to achieve a degree of quality that the fans expect, they have reviewed the design of the console with the original team and are also working with Japanese developers experienced in software development. This is likely in response to the negative reaction when it was revealed that AtGames would be developing the Mega Drive Mini. AtGames produced and released the Sega Genesis Flashback and the Sega Mega Drive Classic Console. Both relied on emulation and suffered issues.
